WICS Initiative
The WICS Initiative is a project founded by Akshara Anand and carried through by the rest of the Women in Computer Science Club at LASA. Through the WICS Initiative, 5-6 girls visit local elementary and middle school girls to have a 30-minute presentation on why having more women in computer science is so important as well as careers in women in computer science. There is also a demonstration of CS projects created by the girls and a fun activity for the girls to start their computer science journey. The girls get flyers and stickers as a keepsake, as well as the contacts of high school girls to mentor them and make connections in the future.
Burnet Middle School Coding Club
With NCWIT's AspireIT Program, Akshara started an after school girl's coding club at Burnet Middle School every Thursday from 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm. She needs assistance from 1-2 other girls every week to help mentor the girls and give them as much help and attention as they need. After initial signups at the first meeting, you can see the spreadsheet below. Akshara is in the process of getting these hours spent at Burnet to count for NHS hours and extra credit. You'll get some fun free tech swag and a great experience mentoring young women and spreading your knowledge. If you've signed up for a slot and realize a couple days before that you aren't able to make it that day, please let us known at least 2 days before so we can get the alternate on it. Thanks for all your help!
