Interested in joining WICS but have no idea where to start? Here's your guide to becoming an active member of WICS!
Come to the first meeting! Meetings are every Wednesday during lunch and we do our best to fill up the 60 minutes with fun-filled activities that will both increase your knowledge in all areas of computer science and allow you the chance to discuss your ideas and current projects! It's alright if you weren't able to make the first meeting, you will still have a chance to introduce yourself and quickly get involved.
Fill out the contact form! This is super important for emailing announcements, buying t-shirts, etc.
Choose your project. It doesn't matter if you have never coded a single line of code or if you're working on your 7th app, there are projects for all levels. Once you join the club and fill out the contact information, you will get access to a Google Sheets with projects you can work on. Choose wisely, because you'll most likely be sticking to this project through the semester and presenting it to the group at the end of each semester!
Once you've started your project, you'll have time to work on it throughout meetings! You'll have a plentiful of resources to assist you. Every three meetings, you can write a small blog post for the website that can showcase how you've progressed, and what you've been up to. Occasionally, we will have guest speakers or lecturers that will present throughout a meeting, but don't worry. The idea of this club is not to assign more work than all the homework we have at LASA- you will never be required to work on your project outside of the club unless you want to!
Sign up to volunteer with us with the WICS Initiative. Once you get started volunteering, you won't want to stop. These hours spent at middle schools and elementary schools promoting Women in Computer Science will count as NHS hours but will also be rewarding, fun, and beneficial.
Look forward to having plenty of fun in this club! You won't only learn new skills, create cool projects, and hear amazing speakers, you'll also make new friends, eat lots of good snacks, wear fun t-shirts, and have a blast every Wednesday during lunch. At the end of the semester we will have an end-of-semester potluck party to relax a little before finals and have fun presenting our projects!
